Killaloe Ballina Community Orchestra

Following the successful debut at the St Patrick’s parade, the KBCO rides again with a

Great Big Gig, Lakeside Hotel – 6pm, Saturday May 15th.

The show will feature some new tunes from Ireland’s only full community orchestra, as well as a showcase of skills from groups within the ensemble.

The concert is a celebration of the talent and community spirit that runs through Killaloe/Ballina and marks the International Day of the Family. It is also fundraiser to help nurture and develop these qualities.

The Killaloe/Ballina Community & Family Resource Centre is working towards the setting up of a dedicated youth space where it intends to run activities such as Youth Exchanges, Youth Clubs, Youth Café, Inter-Generational Projects, Band Practice Space & Rock School, to name but a few. The Resource Centre has identified a space and is now looking for support from the community to establish this desperately needed Youth Space.

Over the winter months a band space was set up at the tourist office (a project enabled by Shannon Heritage) and was widely used - some of the groups performing tonight are a direct result. This concert is the first step in making such facilities permanent and available to all.

The Killaloe Ballina Community Orchestra first performed at the St Patricks day parade. Its combination trad, classical, rock, pop and folk musicians, mix of ages from under five to over sixty, and range of standard from beginners to internationally recognised professionals make it, as far as we are aware, the only group of its kind in existance.

As well as the Community Orchestra we will be treated to short performances from some of the groups who have come together to create the orchestra - again all ages and styles will be represented - including the new Killaloe/Ballina Gospel Choir, which was set up just three weeks ago, and is open to all who fancy coming along on a Thursday evening and singing some soul.
